CBD for Quitting Smoking: What the Research Shows

Cigarette smoking is a favorite pastime among many people. It is not the healthiest habit since it’s a leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths every year.

With it being harmful to your health, every day countless people try to; quit smoking. But unfortunately, fewer than one in ten adult cigarette smokers succeed in quitting each year.

Quitting smoking is no easy task because cigarettes are addictive. But what if I told you that; you can start using CBD for quitting smoking, and it will help you give up cigarettes.

Yes, I know it might seem inaccurate that a compound of cannabis can help stop cigarette smoking.

You have probably heard how CBD has helped different people deal with stress and anxiety but not so much in assisting you to quit smoking.

Even so, a smoker trying to quit, CBD might be what you need because research shows that it may help mitigate the withdrawal symptoms. They are the result of the addictive compound nicotine that’s; found in cigarettes.

Hence when you stop smoking, you will experience withdrawal symptoms that; are unpleasant and might be the main reason you relapse.

They include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Insomnia/sleep problems
  • Constipation
  • An intense craving for nicotine
  • Slow heart rate
  • Mood swings

Therefore by managing these symptoms, you can finally kick the habit.

The interest in CBD here is because of conventional methods used by smokers to quit, like nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) have a low success rate.

NRT involves using a nicotine patch, gum, or spray which has low levels of nicotine. Thus it helps you cut down on craving nicotine and ease the withdrawal symptoms too.

However, a 2012 study shows that it does not appear to be effective in helping smokers quit long-term, even when combined with smoking cessation counseling.

But what is the scientific evidence on how CBD can help you stop smoking.

What the Research Says on Using CBD for Quitting Smoking

There is limited research on using CBD to help you stop smoking since it is a new area of focus in cannabis research. But the little research conducted is encouraging and shows promise that CBD can be a viable solution for smokers trying to quit.

And based on the available research, here are some facts you should know.

  1. CBD May Help in Reducing Cigarette Consumption

A 2013 study assessed the impact of CBD in 24 smokers who wished to stop smoking. They were to receive an inhaler of CBD or a placebo for one week. They used the inhaler when they felt the urge to smoke.

Over the week, placebo-treated smokers showed no differences in several cigarettes smoked. But those treated with CBD significantly reduced the number of cigarettes smoked by 40%. It suggests that CBD may be a potential remedy for nicotine addiction.

  1. CBD Helped Reduce the Craving for Tobacco

A 2018 study on 30 cigarette smokers was; investigating the attentional bias to tobacco cues or images. They had received 800 mg of oral CBD and, it was; recorded that it reduced the salience and pleasantness of cigarette cues.

Therefore the participants in the study had no interest in smoking even after being shown images of other people smoking. Thus you can utilize CBD in helping smokers not to crave tobacco or cigarette use.

  1. CBD Alleviates Withdrawal Symptoms

Headaches, anxiety, mood changes, and insomnia are some of the most notable withdrawal symptoms.

But with CBD, you can successfully manage these symptoms and make the journey to quitting smoking easier. CBD can reduce anxiety, improve your mood, offer pain relief, and help/improve your sleep.

While more studies and research around CBD for quitting smoking needs to be; done, the research available now is encouraging news to smokers willing to stop. It is because they have a product that; will help with managing the withdrawal symptoms, reduce tobacco cravings and cigarette consumption.

But always consult your doctor before using any CBD products, especially if you are a first-time user.
